Before you leave
- Check the refrigerator and choose meals for food you already have.
- Write quantities on your list, not just ingredient names.
- Make space for chilled groceries and take cold packs for a long or hot journey.
At the store
- Compare prices using the same unit and similar products.
- Inspect packaging and read storage and preparation directions.
- Buy a bulk pack only when the extra portions have a plan.
- Collect chilled and frozen foods near the end of the trip.
Back at home
- Put perishables away promptly; check the refrigerator is at 40°F (4°C) or below.
- Keep raw animal foods from leaking onto ready-to-eat food.
- Use raw chicken within 1–2 refrigerated days, or freeze.
- Label portions and make the next meal visible.
After cooking
- Refrigerate perishables within two hours, or one hour above 90°F.
- Divide large quantities into shallow containers; do not wait for room temperature.
- Date leftovers and use most cooked leftovers within 3–4 refrigerated days.
- Reheat leftovers to 165°F (74°C), checking with a thermometer.
